Architectural Shingles

Before dimensional shingles came on the scene, traditional 3-tab shingles were the most often used in replacement. They were created in the 1970s from organic materials with fiberglass mixed with asphalt & other added minerals to make them even more durable against the elements. Traditional shingles have no depth & look flat leading roofers to layering them up in ways to add dimension. This is what initiated the original idea of dimensional shingles as a solution.

Dimensional shingles are also known as laminated or architectural shingles. They are like traditional asphalt shingles with one key difference. Their depth, thickness & layered appearance. Traditional asphalt shingles give the roof a very bland appearance, where dimensional shingles have two layers bonded together adding dimension. In addition, random notches have been removed exposing the layer underneath giving these shingles a three-dimensional display with contrasting low & high tabs.

Performance of Dimensional Shingles

Dimensional shingles are generally tougher than traditional 3-tab shingles & actually offer more protection from wind, rain & hail. In addition, dimensional shingles of the highest grades can withstand 130 mph winds. Their lifespan is also much longer.

Benefits of Dimensional Shingles

Dimensional shingles has many benefits over traditional asphalt shingles. The pros include the following reasons:

  1. Stronger and more durable than traditional shingles
  2. Provide a multi-dimensional appearance and texture
  3. More attractive with tons of options & colors, giving your roof a one of king look from other looks on your street
  4. Viewed as more aesthetically pleasing
  5. Longer lifespan
  6. Heavier construction makes them less likely to warp
  7. Much better at covering up structural imperfections in the roof
  8. Due to massive popularity, they are readily available in many colors
  9. Works on most roof pitches & type’s dimensional shingles can be used almost anywhere except where flat or low sloped

Modified Bitumen Roof

Modified bitumen roofs have many advantages associated with them. For one is a very long-lasting, easily surviving for 20 years or more. Furthermore, they have a very long & substantial history of performance. Unlike some more modern methods of roofing that cannot be counted on to hold over time. Modified bitumen roofing systems can be seamless unlike other methods that have open seams covered by another material. That material can weaken over time, causing leaks & irreparable damage. However, a modified bitumen roofing system no matter the application method the seams are melted together. This helps to stop leaks & prevents further damage.

Modified bitumen roofing systems also have high tensile strength & are very durable. They are far less likely to crack in ways that other flat & low sloop roofing systems are known for. Modified bitumen roofs are rated for hail, fire & wind, which makes them less likely to be damaged in those events. In addition, they are much more durable to high foot traffic. Also, it is easy to maintain when it need maintenance or repairs. Another advantage is that they have great thermal performance & insulated systems achieve high thermal value. This can mean great savings on your next energy bill. The modified bitumen roofing systems usually include a longer manufacturer’s warranty which can give you peace of mind over your investment.
